Ontario 211 can help during the holidaysBy Destiny Bedwell

The calls to 211 during the holidays are reflective of what many people are experiencing: the need for winter clothes, food, toys for their children, rent and utility assistance, mental health assistance, shelter and caring company to name a few.

The holidays are a crucial time to ask for help and unfortunately, application lists fill up fast. 211 is a free and confidential phone number to find information on community and social services for those in need. We have trained and caring specialists who assist callers and provide information to access the most appropriate services, based on their needs.

211 works with local services to gather information on many holiday programs that are available in the community. Communities organize gift, toy, clothing and food drives for different age groups.  They also organize parties, holiday meals and visits for those isolated or at risk. In addition, community groups and agencies are often looking for volunteers. 211 staff work hard to keep up to date with information on community services that are available so they can provide the most pertinent information to callers.
